What ID documents are accepted?

You must have one of these documents:

  • Passport
  • or a Canadian Permanent Resident card

When you book a test, you must provide the details of one of these ID documents, and upload a photo of it. Click here for more instructions on how to upload your ID.

My application is "unverified". What does this mean?

Your application is unverified until a staff member checks it. You will either:

  • receive an email confirming your verified application
  • or receive an email asking you to upload a new photo of your ID

We appreciate your patience while we review your application. It may take a few days for a staff member to check your application and ID photo, due to high volumes of applications.

I have refugee status in Canada. Can I take a test?

Yes. If your passport has been claimed by the Canadian government under refugee status, you may use your Refugee Protection Claimant Document (RPCD) as your ID document for the test.

Use the document number as your ID number or passport number, take a photo of the claimant document and enter the expiry date on the document. If it does not have an expiry date, please enter 01/01/2025 as the expiry date. Contact our office if you have any questions.

What ID documents are NOT accepted?

ID documents that are NOT accepted:

  • BCID
  • Drivers licence
  • Expired passports
  • Any other provincial identification from a Canadian province
  • Identification from a different country (except for a passport)

If you register with any of these documents, your application will not be approved. Cancellation fees may apply. If you do not cancel your booking and attend your test with an unacceptable ID document, your total test fee will be forfeited. In this situation, you must book and pay for a test again. No refund will be offered.

Can I bring a photocopy or certified copy of my passport to the test?

No. IELTS does not accept copies, even if they have been certified as the true original. You need to bring the original valid passport to your test.
